In the poorer parts
of New York, there was acolony where many struggling artists lived. Among
them were Sue and Joanna. They had come to New York from different parts of
the United States. When they met, they found that they shared the same
interests, and so they became friends. Together, they took up rooms in the
colony. There, they set up a joint studio, and tried to earn a living through
art. Joanna was small,
thin and not very strong. After spending a few months in New York, she became
ill with pneumonia patients. Though Sue looked after her well. Joanna or
Johnsy as she was called, showed no signs of improvement. One day, the doctor
told Sue that Johnny had one chance in ten. And that chance is for her to
want tolive, he said, Your little lady has made up her mind that she is not
going to get well. He told Sue that medicines alone did not help if the
patient did not wish to live. Sue, too, looked out of the window. |

Patriotism is not enough. Patriotism
is the first virtue commended by all poets. It is one of the noblest
sentiments a man could express. It is always a patriot who makes the
foundations of a country strong and lifts it to the heights of greatness.
Patriotism brings into play the dormant virtues of a man. It inspires him to
overcome his weaknesses and display great courage. It makes him dedicated to
the progress of his country. Hence patriotism is a very great quality. But we
must realize that it is not enough. Today when we are striving for peaceful
Co-existence and are dreaming of one world, we need something beyond
patriotism. Patriotism, despite its nobility, is a narrow sentiment. What we
need today is a cosmopolitan outlook. Our patriotism should not make us
incapable of sympathizing with others; it should rather be the first stage
towards a nobler realization of the oneness of entire humanity. Today we need an international approach to all problems confronting us; and mere patriotism cannot give us that approach. Surely patriotism is essential but not enough. |

One day, Emperor Jovinian lay in bed
thinking about his vast empire and the power he had over hispeople. He began
to feel very proud and superior. No one would dare to disobey me, he thought.
I am the greatest, the most powerful. No one can touch me not even God. Why,
even God doesn’t have powers greater than mine. In fact, is there any other
god than me? Thinking such boastful thoughts, he feel asleep. The next morning, he wanted to go
hunting. No sooner said than done. Preparations were made immediately and he
went hunting along with many guards and attendants. The whole morning they
chased and hunted wild animals. The Emperor began to get tired, bot and
thirsty. Just then, he saw a stream flowing by. He ordered his guards to
stop. Wait here at a distance till I refresh
myself in the stream. So saying, he rode alone to the edge of the water,
alighted from the horse, took off this clothes and plunged into the cool,
crystal clear water. He forgot the heat, the exhaustion and began to relax. |

It is more profitable to read one man
than ten books. Practical experience is much better than theoretical
knowledge. Books give us only theoretical knowledge. They explain to us the
basic principles that govern human life. But it is the application of these
principles which is more valuable. Application changes with contexts and
books cannot explain contexts. Human life is like a game of chess. Rules
govern the game. But the knowledge of rules does not make one an expert
player. To become a good player, one must play. In fact, it is desirable to
play against a variety of players to grasp the subtleties and complexities of
the game. Similarly in order to understand life, one should meet as many
people as possible. And one should try to understand their strengths and
weaknesses, their motives, their inspirations, the factors that govern their
thinking and conduct. Understanding even one man like this
is more Profitable than reading ten books. So try to understand people. |

Exercise No. 29
Youth and age will never agree.
Generation gap is much talked about phenomenon today. Itindiacates the wide
hiatus separating the young from the old. Some time the gulf separating them
is so wide that there hardly appears to be any possibility of bridging it.
However, the disagreement
between the young and the old is not a characteristic of modern times alone.
It has left its imprint on every age
though it is more pronounced today than ever before. Rapid scientific
advancement coupled with the accelerated pace of economic changes has greatly
influenced the thinking of the young and they reject everything with a stamp
of the past as dead wood. Old customs and traditions appear to them as
obsolete and irrelevant. But conformity to the same traditions ensures stability to the old. They feel
that the young are out to destroy
the existing order with nothing more desirable to replace it. Thus while age looks back and opts for static conservatism, youth looks ahead towards dynamic change. |

A little knowledge is a dangerous
thing. This oft- quoted line from
Alexander Pope emphasizes the danger of having inadequate or shallow
knowledge. Knowledge is the
ultimate source of power. Whatever little knowledge a person has should do
him good, and the more he has, the
better for him. To say that knowledge
is dangerous seems to be a paradoxical statement. In fact, what is dangerous
is not knowledge but the ignorance of
the limitations of one’s knowledge. To take a concrete example, let us
suppose a man gets injured in an accident. It is good to have a little
knowledge so that timely first aid can be given to him. But thereafter he
should be taken to the hospital as quickly as possible. It would be dangerous
to presume that we know much and start treating the patient ourselves. Quacks virtually know nothing but are highly presumptuous. That is why they are responsible for the death of so many people. In order to avoid the dangers, we should make a positive effort to know more. |

Newspaper reading has
become a habit with most of the educated people. Newspapers are now as
necessary for a modern man as food, clothing, housing and education. We can’t
do without the newspapers. The students, the politicians, the businessmen,
the unemployed, the men in search of matrimonial alliance, the seeker after
pleasure, the artists-all turn the pages of the newspapers. Each and every
body begins his day with at least a quick glance in the newspaper. Even the
heads of States have to scan some of their coloumns to see how the public and
the politicians, think about them and react to their policies. Newspaper are
many. First of all, it provides us with the latest news and information of
the city, the country, the neighbouring states and the world. In these days
of science and technology, the things move so fast, events take place so
quickly and in great number that to keep track, newspaper reading is a must. |

Examinations are very
important. They judge ability, skills, aptitude, power of judgement and
thinking of the concerned examinees. Success in life and career, more or
schools, colleges, and universities impart training and education, then
awa5rd certificates, diplomas and degrees to the successful candidates. From
the beginning to the end, there is a series of tests and examinations. Life
itself is a series of ordeals and test. Thus, examinations are unavoidable.
They provide a proof of a student’s progress, learning. They are the only
means by which it can be decided whether a trainee or a student deserves to
be promoted to the next higher class or not. Examinations urge and
inspire students to study hard, it is because of these tests and examinations
that students are serious, regular and punctual in studies. It creates a sense of
discipline and a desire to fir better and score better than others in the
examination. A healthy competition is there because of these tests. But are
these examinations sure test of one’s merit and academic achievements? |
