The glaring incident is the Bhopal gas
leak in December. Thousands of the residents of Bhopal died due to lungs
problem which was caused by methylamine gas from the Union Carbide Plant. The
garbage emitting foul smell, the decaying plants and animals also cause air
pollution. Hence the doctors advise the patients having lungs trouble to
settle in some rural places because the air of villages in pure and free from
pollution. Then comes sound pollution. The harsh
sounds of buses, its, mopeds etc. effect our power of hearing and cause far
trouble. It has been reported that there art tow villages named BirasPalli
and DevadasPalli near Dum Dum, Airport in Calcutta, where a large number of
people have lost their power of hearing. This is because of the frequent
sounds of planes coming in and going out of Dum Dum Airport. The evils of
sound pollution can be imagined from this example. The water of rivers is being
constantly polluted by dangerous chemical water. |

The disaster was not a new concept. It
has been with us since the history of human being. The previous generations
have suffered from their consequences, recovered from them and have continued
to live. Most of the problems that have remained threatening from the
beginning have become more severe and have added to the risks. The rise in
population is one of the factors which has forced the people to live in
disaster prone areas. As we know that the new types of
disaster have emerged after the world war II. They have affected some countries and communities. The instances of
social violence, hijacking, terrorism and civil unrest are common in recent
times. The challenging thrests have come from the hazardous materials. The
Bhopal tragedy (1984) is one of the severe disasters of this category. The threat from atomic and nuclear
sources are creating the hurdles in disaster management. |

Exercise No. 51
I think this time you will be proud of
your son. Our class was given charge of conducting the cultural programme on
the occasion of the Independence Day. Held for the spastic children in the
local spastic school, and we managed it very well and it is not just my
opinion everyone praise us. We planned it a month in advance. I
was in charge of the planning committee. We went and met the teachers of the
school. We mad friendship with the children. One child seemed brighter than
the rest. We taught him to say ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘VandeMataram’. On Independence Day, all the children
were brought to our school by their teachers. We had the arranged seats for
them. We had the flag hoisting ceremony and then the singing of the national
anthem. It was touching to see them standing. Some were trying quite hard to
salute the flag. Then the child I told you about came to the stage and said
‘Jai Hind’ and ‘VandeMataram’. There were tears in everyone’s eyes. |

With the First and Second World war,
considerable forests were felled to meet the needs of war. In that period.
Even the railways used to be run with fuel wood obtained from forests. In the
post independence period a large number of reservoirs and dams were
constructed to impound water for irrigation and power generation. As a result
extensive forests were lost due to submergence and rehabilitation of the
displaced families from villages which came to be submerged. To grow more food campaign of the
fifties had to the cultivation of lands over vast areas, even lands which had
luxurious forest growth. Many a times this assignment to cultivation was of
lands which had no soil potential to sustain agriculture. Due to excessive
the cattle population, most of it scrub type, incapable of any service,
either by way of milk or muscle power, the forest floors were over gazed. All the regeneration in
the forests was completely damaged and this resulted in loss of future crop
in the forest. We use fuel for every activity, livelihood, potentialities So think it seriously. |

We all live in families. In many
houses, both parents work outside the house, and are very tired when they
return home. In the villages, life is harder due to the lack of proper
facilities. Under such cirumstances, if children help with the simple household
chores, day-to-day life will be easier for the adults. Small jobs like
folding clothes, buying groceries and vegetables, dusting and sweeping, can
easily be done by students. In the villages, in addition to these chores,
children can help by keeping the cattle sheds clean and looking after the
cattle, bringing water, etc. These jobs should be done voluntarily and
cheerfully, without feeling that they are their demeaning or boring. Children
spend a large part of their working hours in school. In fact, the school is
like a second home. Therefore, students must help in maintaining cleanliness
not only the duty of the Authorities. Students too, have that responsibility. |
