With the First and Second World war,
considerable forests were felled to meet the needs of war. In that period.
Even the railways used to be run with fuel wood obtained from forests. In the
post independence period a large number of reservoirs and dams were
constructed to impound water for irrigation and power generation. As a result
extensive forests were lost due to submergence and rehabilitation of the
displaced families from villages which came to be submerged. To grow more food campaign of the
fifties had to the cultivation of lands over vast areas, even lands which had
luxurious forest growth. Many a times this assignment to cultivation was of
lands which had no soil potential to sustain agriculture. Due to excessive
the cattle population, most of it scrub type, incapable of any service,
either by way of milk or muscle power, the forest floors were over gazed. All the regeneration in
the forests was completely damaged and this resulted in loss of future crop
in the forest. We
use fuel for every activity, livelihood, potentialities So think it
seriously. |

We all live in families. In many
houses, both parents work outside the house, and are very tired when they
return home. In the villages, life is harder due to the lack of proper
facilities. Under such cirumstances, if children help with the simple
household chores, day-to-day life will be easier for the adults. Small jobs
like folding clothes, buying groceries and vegetables, dusting and sweeping,
can easily be done by students. In the villages, in addition to these chores,
children can help by keeping the cattle sheds clean and looking after the
cattle, bringing water, etc. These jobs should be done voluntarily and
cheerfully, without feeling that they are their demeaning or boring. Children
spend a large part of their working hours in school. In fact, the school is
like a second home. Therefore, students must help in maintaining cleanliness
not only the duty of the Authorities. Students too, have that responsibility. |

Displays work in typewriting includes
the artistic setting out of headings. Subheadings and other matter. The
ability to display effectively is to some extent a natural gift. It may be
acquired by careful study of good typewritten models, or displayed work and
high grade printed matter. Of course, the printer has better facilities than
the typist, for he has an almost unlimited number of styles and sizes of
types withwhich he has to work while the typist is limited to use one style
and one size. Within these limitation, however, the typist can accomplish
much. The chief object of the typist when
displaying matter should be to distribute if effectively over the page. The
principal items should be brought out prominently by a very thoughtful use of
line spacing and the centering of headings in spaced and unspaced capital.
Time must be spent in making the necessary calculations and in balancing the
headings to the best advantages, as this is in the nature of artistic work. Typist must know the length of paper
of which he is going to type the matter. |

My favorite sportsperson is P.T. Usha.
She was born in Payyoli in Kerala on 20th may 1964. She won every
track event in school. At the age of , in the National Games, she also won
her coach O.M. Nambiar, who coached her through most of her career. At the
age of 16, she took part in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. At the age of 20 she
become the First Indian woman to enter the 400m finals. At the 1984 Los
Angeles Olympic Games, she missed the Bronze medal by 1/100 sec. P.T.Usha is an inspiration to all
sports-loving women in India. She took a temporary retirement in 1990 But
returned in 1993 after the birth of her son. She was criticized for being too
old. But she went on and won three gold medals at the Federation Cap Athletic
Championship at Pune. She was the sprint queen of Asia
having won many Medals in the Asian Games. To me, she is a role model who
inspires me with her qualities of genius and determination. It is wonder that
the conventional postal mail is now. |

When a person appreciates what we have
done, by saying a polite ‘Thank you’ or some one says ‘Sorry’ When he has
dashed against us by mistake, what is our reaction? We feel pleased and
happy. We feel that the person has behaved in a very nice manner. Such
manners imply conduct, that does not give offence, charming behavior and
politeness are the pre-requisites of good manners. A man having good manners
goes out of his way to see to it that he does not offend the feelings and
sentiments of others by his words or behavior. He is a man who readily uses
words of courtesy like ‘Pleas, Thank you, Excuse me, I beg you pardon, Sorry,
and the like. These are words which cost us nothing. But make us gain a lot. Again,
we should listen patiently when someone is telling us something. Interrupting
a person indicates bad manners. While waiting for a bus or for ticket, we
should stand in a queue and await our turn. Young people respect the senior
citizens. |

Air is the ocean we breathe. Air
supplies us with oxygen which is essential for our bodies to live. Human
activities can release substances into the air, some o which cause problems
for humans, plants, and animals. There are several main types of
pollution and well-known effects of pollution which are commonly discussed.
These include some acid rain, the greenhouse effect and holes in the ozone
layer. Each of these problems has serious implications for our health and
well-being as well as for the whole environment. One type of air pollution is the
release of particles into the air from burning fuel for energy. Diesel smoke
is a good example of this. Another
type pollution is the release of noxious gases, such as sulfur dioxide,
carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and chemical vapors. These can take part in
further chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reaction
once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain. Pollution also
needs to be considered inside our homes. |

The birds are able to guess about the
coming weather by watching the duration of the day as the day starts getting
longer or shorter according to the change. It is believed that the bids are
very sharp in judging such changes. Some birds have a special gland which
helps them in understanding the change in the season. Now the question is :
how do the birds find their way while migrating from a place and then
returning to their original place? Many
experiments have been conducted to find the answer to this question. A group
of storks were lifted from their nests on the eve of their migration and they
were taken at a far off place. It was discovered that as the time of
migration came, these birds were successful in migrating to a place with a
congenial weather. When the weather at this stage became adverse, they came
back to their original place. These experiments proved that the birds are
gifted with a natural instinctive power which helps them to trace their path
and abode and birds were taken out. |

Before man learnt the use of language
i.e. verbal communication, he used visual signs or non-verbal means of communication
for making himself understood. Modern man continues to make use of non-verbal
as well as visual signs for communication. This is especially so in certain
fields such as business and commerce and science and technology. In these
fields information is often presented in the form of simplified pictures such
as graphs, charts, tables and maps. This makes it easy even for people
speaking different languages to understand what is communicated. The impact
of such visual communication is immediate and perhaps remembered for a longer
period of time. In
your academic work or in your day to day life you may have to read or listen
to something, as a story for instance, with a number of persons in it. You
may also have to read or listen to information or instructions about how to
get to a particular place or about the process of making something. You will
find it useful to see. |

Nandita had kept quiet. She did not
tell her cousins that there was no one at home to play with her. She had no
brothers or sisters and she could not very well play these games all by
herself! But instead of explaining, she had quickly run off to hide her toys.
Then she had stashed away the doll’s house in a corner of the cupboard, where
it had gathered dust all these days. As the idea struck her now, Nandita
jumped down from her bed. She switched on the light and pulled the doll’s
house. She dusted and wiped the house and stood it on her table again. How
pretty it looked with its red tiled roof and cream walls. It was indeed a
shame to put such a toy away. She opened the doors and peeped into the rooms. The
upstairs bedroom would make a good home for the birds. But first the rooms
must be cleared of furniture. The tiny beds, the dressing table, and the sofa
must be removed. The frilly curtains would have to go, too. Nandita called
out to the sparrow, “You are my guests.”
