The disaster was not a new concept. It has been with us since the history of human being. The previous generations have suffered from their consequences, recovered from them and have continued to live. Most of the problems that have remained threatening from the beginning have become more severe and have added to the risks. The rise in population is one of the factors which has forced the people to live in disaster prone areas.

As we know that the new types of disaster have emerged after the world war II. They have affected some  countries and communities. The instances of social violence, hijacking, terrorism and civil unrest are common in recent times. The challenging thrests have come from the hazardous materials. The Bhopal tragedy (1984) is one of the severe disasters of this category.

The threat from atomic and nuclear sources are creating the hurdles in disaster management.

I think this time you will be proud of your son. Our class was given charge of conducting the cultural programme on the occasion of the Independence Day. Held for the spastic children in the local spastic school, and we managed it very well and it is not just my opinion everyone praise us.

On Independence Day, all the children were brought to our school by their teachers. We had the arranged seats for them. We had the flag hoisting ceremony and then the singing of the national anthem. It was touching to see them standing. Some were trying quite hard to salute the flag. Then the child I told you about came to the stage and said ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘VandeMataram’. There were tears in everyone’s eyes.

With the First and Second World war, considerable forests were felled to meet the needs of war. In that period. Even the railways used to be run with fuel wood obtained from forests. In the post independence period a large number of reservoirs and dams were constructed to impound water for irrigation and power generation. As a result extensive forests were lost due to submergence and rehabilitation of the displaced families from villages which came to be submerged.

To grow more food campaign of the fifties had to the cultivation of lands over vast areas, even lands which had luxurious forest growth. Many a times this assignment to cultivation was of lands which had no soil potential to sustain agriculture. Due to excessive the cattle population, most of it scrub type, incapable of any service, either by way of milk or muscle power, the forest floors  were over gazed. All the regeneration in the forests was completely damaged and this resulted in loss of future crop in the forest.

We use fuel for every activity, livelihood, potentialities So think it seriously.

Exercise No. 53

We all live in families. In many houses, both parents work outside the house, and are very tired when they return home. In the villages, life is harder due to the lack of proper facilities. Under such cirumstances, if children help with the simple household chores, day-to-day life will be easier for the adults. Small jobs like folding clothes, buying groceries and vegetables, dusting and sweeping, can easily be done by students. In the villages, in addition to these chores, children can help by keeping the cattle sheds clean and looking after the cattle, bringing water, etc. These jobs should be done voluntarily and cheerfully, without feeling that they are their demeaning or boring.

Children spend a large part of their working hours in school. In fact, the school is like a second home. Therefore, students must help in maintaining cleanliness not only the duty of the Authorities. Students too, have that responsibility.

Exercise No. 40

None but a fool is always right. We must be knowing people who always claim to be right. Howsoever fanciful, irrelevant or absurd their views on a subject may be, they assert they are right and are not prepared to brook any contradiction or challenge. Their cocksureness makes them presumptuous and this nature destroys all possibilities of acquiring knowledge. The first step towards knowledge is the realization of one’s ignorance. How can a person who does not realize his ignorance ever be curious to acquire knowledge? He contemptuously looks upon all opinions that differ from what he says and denies himself all possibilities of learning anything new. He is convinced that others are wrong while he is right. Then he fails to learn what is actually right.

Darkness cannot be light, but unless a person realizes that he is wallowing in darkness, he can have no desire of going into light. Wisdom ever keeps away from such a person. He is doomed to unrelieved folly.

Man is a bundle of habits. Anything done often and repeatedly is called a habit. It is an acquired pattern of action which becomes easy and automatic because of repetition. Thus, habits, once formed, are difficult to be removed. That is why, the saying, ‘Old habits die hard’.

The root of habit is practice and regularity. The more we repeat a habit, the more permanent it becomes. We are bound to repeat habit, because if we do not, we feel uncomfortable and uneasy. This is called the force of habit.

Habits can be good as well as bad. But it is very easy to acquire bad habits.

Bad habits once acquired become thebonds and a chain for ever, if one becomes a victim of bad habits, they render its escape impossible, habits become part of a man’s nature. They can’t be changed specially at advanced stage.

As a cat can’t change its stripes, so your can’t change or get rid of evil habits. Like one’s name they stick fast and remains till the grave.

Our ancient rishis and sages always retired  to the mountains and in forests, for Samadhi, deep meditation and a search for the truth, Mighty rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmputra, Sindhu, etc., have their origins in the Himalayas. Similarly, the mountains in central and south India are the source of many sacred and mighty rivers.

Nature has been very liberal in bestowing the gifts of mountains on us in India. The Himalayas is one of the youngest mountains and the Aravalis one of the oldest ones.

Exercise No. 35

Time is precious, time is money. We all grow in time, we live in time and we perish in time. Time is universal and all important. But what is time? Perhaps nobody can define it precisely. We may not be able to define it, but we know what it is and how valuable it is. Our life is a short span of time in the eternity and we must make best use of it.

Everybody wants success, but only a fortunate few achieve it, because they make the most of every second of this precious commodity called time. Time and tide waits for no man or woman. One cannot command time to stop or to wait. You cannot buy it, nor can your recover it. Time once wasted and spent, can never be regained. The flow of time is ceaseless and eternal. It is more powerful than the mightiest kings, princes and monarchs. Kingdoms, dynasties and epochs come and go but the flow of time goes for ever uninterrupted. Time is death, time is birth, time is old age, and it is everything. Nothing escapes time. Time is abstract but its footprints are concrete and palpable.

Deposit is a loan taken by a company from an individual. Deposits, therefore, represent borrowed or debt capital. When a company accepts deposit from a person it borrows from him and issues a Fixed Deposit Receipt to him. By issuing deposit receipt it acknowledges its liability.

A company may accept deposits from the public as well as from its members. It may also accept deposits from its employees or their relatives. Generally deposits are known as ‘Public Deposits’.

Public deposits constitute borrowed capital. Many companies raise capital by accepting deposits. They pay interest at a fixed rate on these deposits. Collected from shareholders and employees. Even though by accepting deposits from the public a company takes loans from them. It does not offer any security in favors of the deposit holder. Therefore, public deposits are unsecured borrowed funds. In good economic conditions a company can raise capital.

Hercules was the son of Ju8piter, king of the gods. Juno, queen of the goddesses, had children of her own and she hated Hercules from the moment of his birth, because Jupiter loved him more than he loved her children.

When he was eight months old, she had two snakes put near him, to kill him. Hercules, however, strong as a man even in his babyhood, strangled the mosters before they could harm him.

Juno then tried, as he grew up, to injure him in other ways. The business of insurance is related to the protection of the economic values of assets. Every asset has a value. The asset would have been created through the efforts of the owner. The asset is valuable to the owner because the expects to get some benefits from it. It is a benefit because it meets some of his needs. The benefit may be an income or in some other form. In the case of factory or a cow, the product generated by it is sold and income is generated. In the case of a motor car, it provides comfort and convenience in transportation. There is no direct income. Both are assets and provide benefits.

Every asset is expected to last for a certain period of time during which it will provide the benefits. After that, the benefit may not be available. There is a life-time for a machine in a factory of a cow or a motor car. None of them will last forever. The owner is aware of this and he can so manage his affairs that by the end of that period or life-time.

Patriotism is not enough. Patriotism is the first virtue commended by all poets. It is one of the noblest sentiments a man could express. It is always a patriot who makes the foundations of a country strong and lifts it to the heights of greatness. Patriotism brings into play the dormant virtues of a man. It inspires him to overcome his weaknesses and display great courage. It makes him dedicated to the progress of his country. Hence patriotism is a very great quality. But we must realize that it is not enough. Today when we are striving for peaceful Co-existence and are dreaming of one world, we need something beyond patriotism. Patriotism, despite its nobility, is a narrow sentiment. What we need today is a cosmopolitan outlook. Our patriotism should not make us incapable of sympathizing with others; it should rather be the first stage towards a nobler realization of the oneness of entire humanity.

Today we need an international approach to all problems confronting us; and mere patriotism cannot give us that approach. Surely patriotism is essential but not enough.

One day, Emperor Jovinian lay in bed thinking about his vast empire and the power he had over hispeople. He began to feel very proud and superior. No one would dare to disobey me, he thought. I am the greatest, the most powerful. No one can touch me not even God. Why, even God doesn’t have powers greater than mine. In fact, is there any other god than me? Thinking such boastful thoughts, he feel asleep.

The next morning, he wanted to go hunting. No sooner said than done. Preparations were made immediately and he went hunting along with many guards and attendants. The whole morning they chased and hunted wild animals. The Emperor began to get tired, bot and thirsty. Just then, he saw a stream flowing by. He ordered his guards to stop.

Wait here at a distance till I refresh myself in the stream. So saying, he rode alone to the edge of the water, alighted from the horse, took off this clothes and plunged into the cool, crystal clear water. He forgot the heat, the exhaustion and began to relax.

Exercise No. 28

It is more profitable to read one man than ten books. Practical experience is much better than theoretical knowledge. Books give us only theoretical knowledge. They explain to us the basic principles that govern human life. But it is the application of these principles which is more valuable. Application changes with contexts and books cannot explain contexts. Human life is like a game of chess. Rules govern the game. But the knowledge of rules does not make one an expert player. To become a good player, one must play. In fact, it is desirable to play against a variety of players to grasp the subtleties and complexities of the game. Similarly in order to understand life, one should meet as many people as possible. And one should try to understand their strengths and weaknesses, their motives, their inspirations, the factors that govern their thinking and conduct.

Understanding even one man like this is more Profitable than reading ten books. So try to understand people.

Exercise No. 29

Youth and age will never agree. Generation gap is much talked about phenomenon today. Itindiacates the wide hiatus separating the young from the old. Some time the gulf separating them is so wide that there hardly appears to be any possibility of bridging it. However,           the disagreement between the young and the old is not a characteristic of modern times alone. It has left its  imprint on every age though it is more pronounced today than ever before. Rapid scientific advancement coupled with the accelerated pace of economic changes has greatly influenced the thinking of the young and they reject everything with a stamp of the past as dead wood. Old customs and traditions appear to them as obsolete and irrelevant. But conformity to the same traditions     ensures stability to the old. They feel that the young      are out to destroy the existing order with nothing more desirable to replace it.

Thus while age looks back and opts for static conservatism, youth looks ahead towards dynamic change.

Exercise No. 30

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. This  oft- quoted line from Alexander Pope emphasizes the danger of having inadequate or shallow knowledge.     Knowledge is the ultimate source of power. Whatever little knowledge a person has should do him good, and  the more he has, the better for him. To say that  knowledge is dangerous seems to be a paradoxical statement. In fact, what is dangerous is not knowledge  but the ignorance of the limitations of one’s knowledge. To take a concrete example, let us suppose a man gets injured in an accident. It is good to have a little knowledge so that timely first aid can be given to him. But thereafter he should be taken to the hospital as quickly as possible. It would be dangerous to presume that we know much and start treating the patient ourselves.

Quacks virtually know nothing but are highly presumptuous. That is why they are responsible for the death of so many people. In order to avoid the dangers, we should make a positive effort to know more.

Exercise No. 31

Newspaper reading has become a habit with most of the educated people. Newspapers are now as necessary for a modern man as food, clothing, housing and education. We can’t do without the newspapers. The students, the politicians, the businessmen, the unemployed, the men in search of matrimonial alliance, the seeker after pleasure, the artists-all turn the pages of the newspapers. Each and every body begins his day with at least a quick glance in the newspaper. Even the heads of States have to scan some of their coloumns to see how the public and the politicians, think about them and react to their policies. Newspaper are many. First of all, it provides us with the latest news and information of the city, the country, the neighbouring states and the world. In these days of science and technology, the things move so fast, events take place so quickly and in great number that to keep track, newspaper reading is a must.
